The United States has taken steps to prevent illegal Internet gambling. Several recent court cases have focused on this issue. In one case, federal marshals seized $3.2 million from Discovery Communications, a media company that accepted advertisements for a Costa Rican casino operation. The company also agreed to launch a $3 million public service campaign to prevent future unauthorized gambling.
Federal laws also prohibit the operation of illegal online gambling. According to 31 U.S.C. 5362(10), “illegal Internet gambling” means “placing, receiving, or transmitting bets over the internet.” These statutes do not apply to remote gaming, which is legal in every state.
